When Ling Duyu returned to his apartment, the pendulum of the ancient clock hanging in the center of the hall swung its twelfth stroke, announcing the end of the day. The sound of insects chirping in the mountains and forests came in faintly through the doors and windows of Ling Duyu's modern duplex townhouse, located high on a hillock.
